Burglars in Chicago’s Morgan Park neighborhood attempted to steal an ATM from a local restaurant by using chains to pull the doors off the establishment on Christmas morning. The incident occurred just hours after Chicago police issued a warning about a series of similar burglaries in the area dating back to September.

Authorities responded to a burglary at El Gallo on 2547 West 111th Street at around 5:25 a.m. on Wednesday. Upon arrival, they discovered that the front doors of the restaurant had been compromised, likely due to the use of chains to force the doors open. The burglars managed to damage the ATM inside the restaurant but were unable to access the cash reserve.

Earlier that evening, Area Two detectives had issued a community alert regarding a pattern of break-ins in the area. The burglaries typically involved thieves using chains to pull open the front doors of businesses with a stolen vehicle before making off with cash registers, ATMs, tobacco products, and other valuables.

A total of 18 burglaries have been linked to this crime pattern, occurring in various locations including South Torrence, South Wentworth, West 79th Street, West Monterey, South Ashland, South Brainard, West 111th Street, South Vincennes, East 87th Street, East 106th Street, East 79th Street, South Halsted, South Cottage Grove, South Ashland, East 83rd Street, South Halsted, East 75th Street, and West 103rd Street.

The suspects involved in these burglaries have been described as “multiple offenders wearing dark clothing, including hoodies and masks.” Anyone with information about these crimes is encouraged to contact Area Two at 312-747-8273 regarding crime pattern #24-2-020(b)CA.
