A 66-year-old Chicago man, Gerald Davis, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for attempting to kill another man with a samurai sword. The incident took place in the 800 block of West 84th Street in the early hours of March 12.

Responding to a noise complaint, police found a 61-year-old man bleeding from his hands, with some fingers missing. The victim had been attacked by Davis, who was seen holding the samurai sword and was arrested on the spot.

According to prosecutors, Davis got into an argument with the victim, punched him, and then retrieved the sword from his car. He struck the victim multiple times, causing severe injuries including severed fingers and permanent nerve damage.

Despite the victim’s pleas, Davis continued his assault until police intervened. Following a jury trial, Davis was convicted of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Judge Ursula Walowski sentenced him to 28 years, with a minimum of 85% to be served before parole, scheduled for December 2047 when Davis will be 89 years old. His attorneys have filed an appeal.

Davis has a criminal history that includes convictions for attempted arson, battery, and criminal sexual abuse. The state sex offender registry lists a crime committed when Davis was 42 years old against a seven-year-old victim.
