Governor Kathy Hochul’s recent announcement regarding the expansion of involuntary commitment is a step in the right direction for public safety in New York. However, more needs to be done to address the surge in violent crime on the streets and subways of the state.

The subway system has experienced the highest number of homicides in 27 years, highlighting the urgent need for action. Governor Hochul’s decision to pursue policy changes to expand involuntary commitment is a positive move, especially in light of recent violent incidents. For years, New Yorkers have been calling for better protection from individuals with severe mental illness, and it is time for the Governor to take decisive action.

The tragic murder of Michelle Go, who was pushed in front of a subway car by a schizophrenic individual, should have been a wake-up call for authorities. Unfortunately, the lack of leadership and proactive measures has left New Yorkers vulnerable to such heinous acts.

The broken system in Albany has failed to prioritize public safety, choosing to downplay the severity of the situation. Open-air drug markets, sudden stabbings, and slashings on the subways, as well as the closure of retail stores due to safety concerns, are all symptoms of a larger problem that needs to be addressed.

Individuals like Kamel Hawkins, who have a history of violence, should not be allowed to roam the streets freely and pose a threat to innocent citizens. The release of repeat offenders back into society only enables them to commit more violent crimes, putting the public at risk.

It is crucial for New York to re-evaluate its laws and policies that have led to the release of dangerous individuals and hindered the prosecution of serious offenders. Judges should be empowered to consider public safety risk when setting bail, a common-sense approach that would garner widespread support among New Yorkers.

Governor Hochul must take bold and decisive action to address the root causes of violent crime in New York. Common sense should prevail in governing the state, especially when it comes to matters of life and death. It is time for leadership and accountability to ensure the safety and well-being of all New Yorkers.

Democratic Congressman Ritchie Torres represents the 15th District and advocates for stronger measures to protect the people of New York from violent crime.
