A tragic incident unfolded in Massachusetts when a disturbed son brutally attacked his elderly parents before setting their home on fire. Darius Hazard, 44, faces charges of murder and arson after his 76-year-old mother, Venture, and 83-year-old father, Donald, were found lifeless in their North Adams residence. The heartbreaking details of the case reveal a chilling sequence of events that led to the devastating outcome.

According to prosecutors, Hazard confessed to investigators that he “snapped” while assisting his mother, who suffered from advanced arthritis and scoliosis. In the early hours of the morning, Hazard and his father were trying to help Venture after she fell, leading to a violent altercation. Hazard reportedly shoved his parents to the floor, repeatedly striking them with various objects and even throwing a fan at his father, who pleaded for him to stop.

In a shocking turn of events, Hazard then proceeded to douse the first floor of the house in gasoline before igniting the flames. As the fire engulfed the home, his parents desperately called out for help, but Hazard callously fled the scene, ignoring their cries. It was only hours later when neighbors noticed the smoke and alerted authorities, who discovered the elderly couple’s bodies in the charred remains of their living room.

The tragic cause of death for both Venture and Donald was determined to be smoke inhalation, a devastating end to their lives at the hands of their own son. Hazard was apprehended in a Walmart parking lot shortly after the incident and taken into custody. The community was left reeling from the senseless violence, with neighbors describing the Hazard family as longtime pillars of the neighborhood.

Despite the shocking nature of the crime, friends and acquaintances of the family expressed disbelief at Hazard’s actions, noting that his behavior was completely out of character. Some mentioned that Hazard had a learning disability, adding a layer of complexity to the tragic situation. As Hazard awaits his next court appearance on December 29, he remains incarcerated without bail at the Berkshire County House of Correction.

The harrowing tale of the Hazard family serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the devastating consequences of unchecked violence. The community mourns the loss of Venture and Donald, beloved members of their neighborhood, while grappling with the incomprehensible actions of their own son. The road to justice and healing will be a long and challenging one for all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
