Susan Zirinsky Returns to CBS News as Interim Executive Editor

Susan Zirinsky, a veteran producer who previously served as president of CBS News from 2019 to 2021, has been called back to the network to take on the role of interim executive editor. In this new position, Zirinsky will be responsible for overseeing standards, vetting stories, and ensuring journalistic practices are upheld to the highest degree. This move comes in light of recent controversies at CBS News, particularly surrounding incidents at “60 Minutes” and “CBS Mornings.”

George Cheeks, co-CEO of Paramount Global, the parent company of CBS News, emphasized the importance of delivering balanced, accurate, fair, and timely reporting, especially on complex and sensitive issues like the war in the Middle East. He highlighted the need to address concerns of perceived bias in CBS News coverage and reiterated the network’s commitment to maintaining its legacy and connection with viewers.

Zirinsky will hold the position of executive editor on an interim basis while Wendy McMahon, the Paramount Global executive overseeing CBS News, searches for a permanent replacement. The executive editor will focus on ensuring that CBS News has the expertise, resources, and oversight needed to cover challenging issues with balance and integrity.

The decision to bring Zirinsky back to CBS News comes as Paramount Global faces acquisition by Skydance Media, with potential implications for regulatory scrutiny. Zirinsky, known for her work on “48 Hours” and special projects, previously led See It Now Studios, a production unit dedicated to documentaries and special programming.

CBS News has faced criticism in recent months, including a $10 billion lawsuit filed by then-candidate Donald Trump over the editing of an interview with Vice President Kamala Harris on “60 Minutes.” The network has also come under fire for segments that were perceived as biased or insensitive, such as a report on former State Department officials’ opposition to the Biden administration’s support for Israel.

As Zirinsky steps back into a leadership role at CBS News, the network is poised to address these challenges and reaffirm its commitment to journalistic integrity and ethical standards. The return of this seasoned producer signals a renewed focus on upholding the values of quality journalism and responsible reporting at CBS News.
