Synthesia Secures $180 Million in Series D Funding Round
As the world grapples with the challenges posed by deepfake content online, not all AI-created videos are met with controversy. London-based startup Synthesia has found success with enterprises, boasting 60,000 businesses and 1 million users leveraging its highly realistic AI avatar technology to create videos from text documents for various purposes like sales, marketing, and training.
Today, Synthesia announced the closure of a $180 million Series D funding round, led by NEA with participation from new investors WiL, Atlassian Ventures, and PSP Growth, as well as existing backers GV and MMC Ventures. This funding catapults the company’s valuation to $2.1 billion, bringing its total funding raised to $330 million.
The funding will primarily be used for hiring initiatives, with a focus on expanding in the Asia Pacific region. CEO and co-founder Victor Riparbelli expressed the company’s commitment to enhancing its avatar technology, aiming to improve realism, interaction capabilities, and integration with different environments and objects.
While Synthesia is prioritizing internal technology development, it also collaborates with third-party providers for certain functionalities, such as voice technology from Eleven Labs and Large Language Models for text processing.
AI startups have been a significant attraction for investors, with AI companies receiving a substantial portion of global funding in 2024. Despite the challenges and ethical considerations surrounding AI technology, Synthesia’s innovative approach has garnered attention and support, including recognition from the U.K. government for its contributions to the AI industry.
Synthesia’s focus on business users sets it apart in a competitive market, with a range of features designed to cater to enterprise needs. The company’s emphasis on practical utility and customer value has resonated with investors like Google Ventures, who see Synthesia as a pioneer in translating cutting-edge AI technology into tangible solutions.
With Atlassian Ventures joining the latest funding round, the potential for collaboration between Synthesia and Atlassian’s suite of products opens up new possibilities for integrating AI-driven video tools into popular platforms like Jira.
As Synthesia continues to evolve its platform and expand its market reach, the company remains at the forefront of AI innovation, offering businesses advanced video solutions for a variety of applications.
