Former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman had some flattering words for Baker Mayfield, emphasizing the quarterback’s competitive spirit and “petty” nature as a positive attribute. This marks a significant shift from their previous conflicts dating back to 2019.

Sherman, a five-time Pro Bowler, commended Mayfield’s competitive mindset during an appearance on Kay Adams’ “Up & Adams” show. The timing of his comments aligns with Mayfield’s resurgence in Tampa Bay, where he has been excelling on the field.

“I do, I like a petty everything. I’m here for pettiness,” Sherman said in response to Adams’ question about appreciating a petty quarterback. He also mentioned that Mayfield is likely to use their past history as motivation, highlighting Mayfield’s own “petty” tendencies.

Their relationship first made headlines in October 2019 when Sherman accused Mayfield of snubbing him during a pregame handshake before a 49ers-Browns game. Despite video evidence later disproving Sherman’s claim, the incident showcased the complexities of their dynamic.

Baker Mayfield’s approach to handling criticism has evolved over time, with the quarterback revealing that he has stepped away from engaging on social media. Instead of keeping notes to prove doubters wrong, Mayfield emphasized the importance of self-belief and moving forward positively.

This shift in mindset has translated into on-field success for Mayfield, as he posted career-best numbers in 2024, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns. His stellar performance played a crucial role in securing back-to-back NFC South titles for the Buccaneers and ultimately led to him signing a lucrative three-year, $100 million contract.

Mayfield’s focus now turns towards playoff success as the Buccaneers gear up to host the Commanders in their wild-card matchup. With a renewed sense of confidence and a determination to succeed, Mayfield is poised to continue making strides in his NFL career.

The mutual respect and acknowledgment of each other’s competitive nature between Sherman and Mayfield signal a positive turn in their relationship, showcasing the growth and maturity of both players. As Mayfield continues to thrive on the field, his journey from criticism to a $100 million signee serves as a testament to his resilience and dedication to success in the NFL.
