The world of comedy is full of talented individuals who have graced our screens with their humor and wit. Many of these A-list stars have tried their luck at joining the iconic cast of “Saturday Night Live,” only to fall short during the audition process. In the first episode of “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night,” a docuseries on Peacock directed by Morgan Neville, the curtain is pulled back to reveal the audition tapes of some of these comedy giants.

One such star is Stephen Colbert, who watched his 1996 audition tape on camera for the first time. In the tape, Colbert played a waiter who is nauseated by food, showcasing his comedic timing and physical humor. Despite his best efforts, Colbert did not make the cut, but he looks back on the experience with a sense of humor and resilience.

Another familiar face is Jordan Peele, who auditioned with a character named Darius, a thug-like barista who refuses to make a caramel mint mocha latte. Peele’s unique brand of humor ultimately led him to co-create the hit sketch comedy show “Key & Peele” and establish himself as a successful film director with movies like “Get Out” and “Nope.”

Jennifer Coolidge, Kevin Hart, Mindy Kaling, and Donald Glover are just a few more comedy stars who auditioned for “SNL” but did not land a spot on the show. Despite the setback, each of these performers went on to achieve great success in their careers, proving that rejection is not the end of the road.

The docuseries also sheds light on the audition process and the tough decisions that the show’s producers have to make when selecting cast members. Some aspiring comedians, like Henry Zebrowski, took bold risks during their auditions, such as appearing completely naked on stage. While Zebrowski’s stunt did not secure him a spot on the show, it certainly left a lasting impression.

As “Saturday Night Live” celebrates its 50th anniversary, NBC has planned a series of events to commemorate the milestone. From a documentary special on the music of “SNL” to an immersive experience at Rockefeller Center, fans will have the opportunity to relive the show’s most memorable moments. A star-studded primetime special taped live from Studio 8H is also set to air, bringing together past and present cast members for a night of laughter and nostalgia.

In the world of comedy, rejection may be inevitable, but as these A-list stars have shown, it is not the end of the road. With talent, perseverance, and a good sense of humor, the sky’s the limit for those who dare to dream of making it big in the world of entertainment.
