A horrific crime unfolded in Queens this week, as Sandra Coto-Navarro, a 48-year-old woman, stands accused of brutally murdering her building’s superintendent, 55-year-old Jose Portillo. The motive behind the shocking attack was reportedly related to unpaid rent amounting to $24,000 that Coto-Navarro and her husband owed.

According to prosecutors, Coto-Navarro used a pipe in the savage assault on Portillo and even attempted to dismember his lifeless body before concealing it in garbage bags under a bed. The heinous nature of the crime was further highlighted by the fact that the victim sustained multiple blunt force trauma injuries to his head, as well as post-mortem sharp force injuries to his neck and left leg near the knee.

Portillo had visited Coto-Navarro’s apartment in Kew Gardens to discuss the overdue rent when the fatal encounter took place. The property owner, who witnessed Portillo entering the couple’s unit but not leaving, became concerned and initiated a wellness check. Subsequently, law enforcement officers discovered the victim’s body hidden under the bed, wrapped in clothing and black garbage bags.

The crime scene was tainted with the smell of bleach, and traces of blood were visible near the bed and dresser, indicating an attempt to clean up after the murder. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz condemned the gruesome murder, emphasizing that violence should never be the solution to a rent dispute. Coto-Navarro was charged with second-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence, and criminal possession of a weapon, and faces a potential sentence of 25 years to life if convicted.

The community, including neighbors like Allison Atlas, a psychologist living next door, expressed shock and disbelief over the tragedy. Atlas described Portillo as a kind and helpful individual, making the senseless loss even more devastating for those who knew him. As the legal proceedings unfold, the victim’s loved ones seek justice for the brutal killing that has left a family shattered and a community in mourning.
