A former swimming champion is facing accusations of fatally assaulting a security guard in Hawaii with a large water bottle while unclothed. Officials have confirmed that the individual had ceased attending school the previous year.

Legend Storer, 20, has entered a plea of not guilty to charges of second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, and indecent exposure related to the unusual incident in Maui.

Concordia University Irvine confirmed on Monday that Storer was previously a student at the private Orange County institution and was part of its men’s swim team.

The Orange County Register reported that Storer did not resume his studies after Concordia discontinued its men’s swimming program in May 2025.

“After Concordia discontinued the Men’s Swim program in May 2025, Legend did not return as a student,” stated Ann Ashmon, the school’s associate vice president of strategic communications, to the paper.

Storer is accused of breaking into the office of a condominium complex in Kahana, Maui, around 1:45 a.m. on August 5, as per police and prosecutors.

During this time, 63-year-old security guard Michael Dyer was on a break when the alleged attack occurred.

According to police, surveillance footage captured Storer attacking Dyer with a five-gallon water bottle. Dyer was subsequently found unresponsive at the complex and declared dead.

About an hour after the alleged incident, police received reports of a naked man roaming the neighborhood.

Storer was located by officers approximately 30 minutes later with multiple abrasions and was taken to a hospital for assessment.

Following a review of surveillance footage, investigators concluded that the man taken to the hospital was allegedly the same individual seen attacking Dyer.

Dyer’s family described him as a devoted husband.

“Mike was a family man and very devoted to his wife, Joy. Our family is in the process of setting up a GoFundMe to help with this sudden and tragic event,” his relatives stated in a message to Hawaii News Now.

Storer had previously attended Maui Preparatory Academy and was a competitor for the Lahaina Swim Club. At Maui Prep, he achieved the title of a two-time Maui Interscholastic League champion, as per his former university profile.

He is currently being held in a Maui jail without bail.

Given that Dyer was 63 years old, prosecutors have classified Storer as an alleged “offender against the elderly,” which could result in a harsher sentence if convicted.

Storer’s attorney declined to comment when contacted by the Register. His mother disconnected the call when approached by a reporter, and his father did not respond.
