The city of Vallejo in northern California is currently facing a surge in crime, leading residents to fear for the safety of their community. This once-quiet city has now found itself on the FBI’s watchlist for small cities due to its increasing crime rate.

Residents of Vallejo have reignited a petition, originally started almost a year ago, calling on Governor Gavin Newsom to deploy state and county officers to assist in addressing the city’s escalating crime problem. The petition has garnered nearly 4,000 signatures, with residents expressing concerns about the deteriorating safety of their once-beautiful city.

Crime data from 2024 revealed that Vallejo experienced at least 25 murders, a shocking increase in violent crime compared to previous years. The city also saw a dramatic surge in other crimes such as rapes, fatal traffic incidents, sexual assaults, aggravated assaults, auto burglary/theft cases, shootings, and domestic violence incidents.

Despite adding new members to its police department, Vallejo continues to struggle with understaffing issues. The city recently appointed Jason Ta as the permanent police chief after a national search, with the department being under state oversight since 2020 following a fatal police shooting.

As residents demand increased security measures, it remains uncertain whether Governor Newsom and the state of California will be able to meet Vallejo’s needs. While the city grapples with rising crime rates, the state has been preoccupied with deploying resources to combat wildfires in southern California, which have claimed lives and destroyed thousands of structures.

The residents of Vallejo are calling for strong leadership and support to regain control of their city and ensure the safety of their community in the face of escalating crime. The situation highlights the challenges faced by small cities in dealing with crime and the need for effective solutions to address these issues.
