In 1994, Smith gained international notoriety when she drove her car into a South Carolina lake with her two sons, 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander, strapped inside. Initially claiming she had been carjacked by a black man, Smith later confessed to drowning her children because her new love interest did not want kids. She was subsequently convicted of double murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
Last year, Smith had a parole hearing where she presented herself as a changed woman, citing her Christian faith and involvement in mentoring other inmates as reasons for release.
