Crime rates in New York City saw a significant decrease in the first month of the year, according to the latest data released by the NYPD. Mayor Eric Adams is set to deliver this positive news during his budget testimony before the state Legislature in Albany.

The statistics from the NYPD reveal a 16.8% drop in overall crime across the seven major categories compared to January 2024. This includes a 24% decrease in murders, a 26% drop in robberies, a 6.9% decrease in felony assaults, a 3.7% decrease in burglary, a 21.7% decrease in grand larceny, and a 23.1% decline in grand larceny auto cases.

However, reported rapes saw a concerning 40% increase from 106 in January 2024 to 149 in the past month. City officials attribute this rise to a new state law that broadened the classification of rape to include forced oral and anal sex, in addition to vaginal penetration.

Transit crimes also saw a significant decline, dropping 36.4% from 231 in 2024 to 147 last month. Major incidents in public housing developments fell by 14.5% from 497 to 425, according to the NYPD data.

Mayor Adams, who is facing re-election this year amidst a criminal corruption trial and declining approval ratings, praised the reduction in crime. He emphasized the importance of public safety in driving prosperity and highlighted the NYPD’s efforts in combating crime and improving quality of life in the city.

Adams also mentioned the deployment of 1,200 additional police officers in the subway system and 300 officers specifically assigned to patrol subway trains overnight as part of a joint program with Governor Kathy Hochul.

Despite the success in reducing crime rates, Adams reiterated the importance of supporting law enforcement and ensuring that New Yorkers not only are safe but also feel safe in their communities. The NYPD’s efforts in making the streets safer were commended, with Adams emphasizing the need for more policing rather than less, contrary to calls for defunding the police.
