On Feb. 5, 1971, Apollo 14 astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell made history by stepping onto the surface of the moon during the first of two lunar excursions.

In 1917, the U.S. Congress passed the Immigration Act of 1917 despite President Woodrow Wilson’s veto, leading to significant restrictions on Asian immigration and the implementation of immigrant literacy testing.

In 1918, over 200 individuals lost their lives during World War I when the Cunard liner SS Tuscania, carrying more than 2,000 American troops to Europe, was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the Irish Sea.

In 1973, a memorial service was held at Arlington National Cemetery for U.S. Army Col. William B. Nolde, the final official American combat casualty before the Vietnam ceasefire went into effect.

In 1993, President Bill Clinton signed the Family and Medical Leave Act, offering workers up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for family emergencies.
