Argentina’s President Orders Withdrawal from WHO Due to Differences in Health Management

In a surprising move, Argentina’s President Javier Milei has ordered the country’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) citing “profound differences” with the U.N. agency. This decision comes in the wake of similar actions taken by other countries, including the United States under former President Donald Trump.

The decision to leave WHO was announced by presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni during a news conference in Buenos Aires. Adorni highlighted that Argentina’s decision was based on disagreements in health management, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. He criticized WHO guidelines at the time, stating that they led to the largest shutdown in history.

Adorni emphasized that Argentina will not allow any international organization to interfere with its sovereignty, especially when it comes to health matters. He expressed concerns about WHO’s lack of independence due to political influences from certain countries, although he did not specify which ones.

WHO, as the leading global health organization, plays a crucial role in coordinating responses to health crises such as outbreaks of new diseases and persistent threats like Ebola and AIDS. However, Adorni pointed out that WHO does not have the authority to enforce specific health actions, and its guidelines are often disregarded by member countries.

Despite Argentina’s withdrawal, Adorni clarified that the country does not receive WHO funding for health management, and the decision will not impact the quality of health services. On the contrary, he believes that leaving WHO will give Argentina greater flexibility to implement policies tailored to its specific needs.

President Milei, a vocal critic of lockdown measures imposed during the pandemic, has been skeptical of international agreements that could potentially infringe on national sovereignty. Last year, his government refused to sign a WHO framework for managing pandemics for this reason.

The timing of Argentina’s withdrawal from WHO coincides with President Milei’s upcoming trip to the U.S. for a summit of right-wing leaders in Washington. While it is unclear if Milei will meet with Trump, his decision to leave WHO aligns with his stance on prioritizing national interests over international commitments.

Overall, Argentina’s departure from WHO reflects a growing trend of countries reevaluating their relationships with international organizations in light of perceived differences in values and priorities. As the global health landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact Argentina’s approach to managing health crises in the future.
