A tragic incident unfolded in Panama City, Florida, when a drunk driver, Jacob Manuel, caused a fatal crash that claimed the lives of a mother and daughter. The devastating collision occurred on John Pitts Road, where Manuel was driving his Dodge Charger at a staggering speed of 130 miles per hour in a 45-mile-per-hour zone. As a result of the impact, Tallulah Ellis, 78, and her daughter Tammy Hughes, 57, were killed, leaving behind a grieving family.

The May 2022 crash also critically injured a 9-year-old girl, who was Hughes’ daughter, as their SUV was forced off the road and into a utility pole by Manuel’s reckless driving. Chief Assistant State Attorney Mark Graham expressed the gravity of the situation during Manuel’s sentencing, emphasizing the profound loss experienced by the victims’ families and the irreversible consequences of his actions.

Surveillance footage revealed that Manuel had been drinking at a bar in Panama City before getting behind the wheel of his vehicle. Despite having a suspended license, he chose to drive under the influence, leading to the tragic collision that claimed two lives and caused severe injuries to another.

Following the crash, Manuel’s blood alcohol level was found to be .099%, exceeding the legal limit of .08% in all 50 states. In light of the evidence against him, Manuel pleaded no contest to two counts of DUI manslaughter and DUI with serious bodily injury. He faced the possibility of life in prison if convicted at trial, but instead, he accepted a plea agreement that sentenced him to 40 years behind bars.

The victims’ families, who were present in the courtroom, approved the state’s plea agreement, recognizing the importance of holding Manuel accountable for his actions. The tragic loss of Tallulah Ellis and Tammy Hughes serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of drunk driving and the importance of making responsible choices behind the wheel.
