AARP Calls on Hollywood to Embrace Age Diversity in Film and TV

A recent study conducted by AARP has shed light on the importance of accurate representation of older adults in movies and television. The findings reveal that adults aged 50 and older are more likely to support content that features characters who reflect their age and life experiences. This study, titled “Breaking Stereotypes: The Push for Real Representation of Older Adults in Movies and Television,” was released ahead of AARP’s prestigious Movie for Grownups Awards gala, which is set to take place in Beverly Hills.

Heather Nawrocki, the vice president of AARP Movies for Grownups, expressed the significance of the study’s results, stating that older adults are passionate about seeing their experiences portrayed authentically on screen. She highlighted the potential benefits for studios and storytellers who successfully capture the perspectives of older adults, tapping into the significant buying power and loyalty of this demographic.

The study, which surveyed 1,010 adults aged 50 and older, identified several barriers to improved and accurate portrayals of older actors in the entertainment industry. The perception that audiences prefer younger actors, industry bias, and limited opportunities for older actors were cited as major obstacles. Despite these challenges, the majority of respondents emphasized the importance of accurate representation of older adults in both casting and storylines.

Moreover, the study revealed that older actors, directors, writers, and producers bring unique perspectives to the table. To combat age bias in the industry, respondents called for more positive portrayals of older adults and advocacy for equal opportunities for professionals aged 50 and older. These changes are seen as crucial steps towards creating a more inclusive and representative media landscape.

Statistics provided by AARP indicate the significant engagement of adults aged 50 and older in the entertainment industry. With millions attending movies and subscribing to streaming services, this demographic has substantial purchasing power. Recognizing this, AARP is advocating for greater diversity and inclusion in the industry to cater to the preferences of older audiences.

The nominees for the 2024 AARP Movie for Grownups Awards include a diverse range of films and talent. From best picture contenders like “A Complete Unknown” and “Gladiator II” to acclaimed actors such as Nicole Kidman and Jude Law, the awards celebrate the achievements of older adults in the entertainment industry.

As Hollywood continues to evolve, AARP’s call for age diversity in film and TV serves as a reminder of the importance of representing all age groups authentically on screen. By embracing the perspectives and experiences of older adults, the industry can create more meaningful and impactful content for audiences of all ages.
