Apple has unveiled a groundbreaking framework that aims to enhance the natural and expressive movements of non-humanoid robots, revolutionizing their interactions with humans in various settings, such as homes and workplaces.

The research, recently published on arXiv, introduces the Expressive and Functional Movement Design ELEGNT, which enables robots to communicate intentions, emotions, and attitudes through their movements, going beyond mere task completion.

According to the researchers from Apple’s robotics team, integrating expressive qualities like intention and emotion into robot movement design is essential for fostering more natural interactions with humans.

Exploring Expressive Movements using a Lamp-like Robot

The study focused on a lamp-shaped robot equipped with a robotic arm and a head with a light and projector, programmed to exhibit both functional movements and expressive gestures to convey its internal state.

User testing with 21 participants revealed that expressive movements significantly enhanced engagement and perception, especially during social tasks like music playing and conversations.

Age Differences in Robot Movement Preferences

The research highlights a potential age gap in receptiveness to expressive robot movements, emphasizing the need for personalized robot behavior based on user preferences.

Shaping the Future of Social Robotics

Apple’s innovative research hints at a paradigm shift in robotics design, emphasizing the importance of emotional engagement alongside task efficiency. The study underscores the need for robots to evoke positive emotions and be welcomed into human environments.

As robots transition from industrial settings to household spaces, their success will depend on their ability to understand and respond to human emotions.

Apple’s research will be presented at the 2025 Designing Interactive Systems conference, showcasing the potential for collaboration between animators, psychologists, and engineers in shaping the next generation of robots.

Ultimately, the integration of natural and expressive movements in robots could redefine human-robot interactions, transforming robots from mere tools to indispensable companions in our daily lives.
