Should Tim Walz Run For Minnesota’s Open Senate Seat?

Minnesota has been a solidly blue state in recent years, with Democratic senators representing the state since 2008. However, with Senator Tina Smith announcing her retirement in 2026, the upcoming Democratic primary will likely determine who will be the state’s next senator.

One potential candidate for the Senate seat is Governor Tim Walz, who is reportedly considering a run. Walz, who was recently a Democratic vice presidential candidate, could potentially bring a strong presence to the Senate if he decides to run.

In addition to Walz, other potential Democratic candidates include Representatives Ilhan Omar and Angie Craig, as well as Attorney General Keith Ellison. There is also speculation that former Senator Al Franken may attempt a comeback to reclaim his old seat.

The question remains whether Tim Walz should pursue a Senate run. While he would undoubtedly be a strong candidate, he faces stiff competition in the Democratic primary. Additionally, some may question whether it’s too soon for Walz to seek another position after his recent vice presidential bid.

On the Republican side, there is talk of competing for the Senate seat, but history shows that Minnesota tends to lean blue in statewide elections. This could factor into Walz’s decision-making process as he weighs his options.

Ultimately, the decision of whether Tim Walz should run for Senate will be a personal one. With a wealth of potential candidates to choose from, Minnesota Democrats have the opportunity to select a strong contender for the Senate seat in 2026.
