Seoul, South Korea:

A tragic incident unfolded in the port city of Busan, South Korea, as a fire engulfed a hotel construction site, resulting in the loss of six lives and leaving over two dozen individuals injured, as reported by the National Fire Agency.

The fire broke out shortly before 11:00 am at the Banyan Tree Hotel construction site, with approximately 100 workers present at the scene when the flames erupted, according to an official statement from the National Fire Agency.

Among the injured, twenty-five individuals suffered varying degrees of injuries, primarily due to smoke inhalation, stated a public health department official.

Describing the scene, Busan Gijang Fire Station chief Hong Mun-sik informed reporters that upon their arrival, the fire had already reached its peak, with thick black smoke shrouding the area. He mentioned the challenges faced due to flammable materials obstructing the entrance.

The fire originated on the first floor of the building where insulation materials were stored, leading to the unfortunate fatalities occurring at the source of the fire, as detailed by Hong.

“A thorough investigation is required to determine the exact cause and origin of the fire,” Hong emphasized.

The fire was eventually brought under control around 1:30 pm.
