Pope Francis To Remain Hospitalised As Doctors Treat Complex Infection: Vatican

The Vatican announced on Monday that doctors have adjusted Pope Francis’ treatment for a respiratory tract infection to address a “complex clinical situation.” The 88-year-old pontiff has been hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for over a week now.

According to a statement released by the Vatican, test results have revealed a polymicrobial infection in the pope’s respiratory tract, leading to a modification in his therapy. The statement also mentioned that Pope Francis will need to remain in the hospital for an unspecified period due to the challenging medical condition.

Despite his hospitalization, the pope has been actively engaging with various activities, including making calls to Gaza’s only Catholic parish. A local priest in Gaza reported that Pope Francis expressed his fatigue during a video call and humorously mentioned that he would be back in action after a few days of rest.

The Vatican confirmed that the pope is in stable condition with no fever and has been able to do some work and read papers while in the hospital. However, his weekly audience and other public events have been canceled due to his ongoing medical treatment.

While the Vatican did not specify the exact nature of the infection, medical experts explained that a polymicrobial infection can be caused by multiple micro-organisms, including bacteria, viruses, or fungi. The treatment approach varies depending on the type of infection.

Pope Francis, who has a history of health issues, including lung infections, had to undergo surgery to remove part of one lung as a young adult. Despite his current health challenge, well-wishers at the Vatican expressed their hopes for his speedy recovery.

As the pope continues his treatment in the hospital, the Vatican assured that he is receiving the necessary care and support. The global Catholic community remains united in prayers for the well-being of their spiritual leader.
