ISTANBUL — President Trump announced that Iranian ships will be prohibited from navigating through the Strait of Hormuz.

“We are reinstalling THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE, specifically targeting Iran’s vessels and their clients from accessing or departing,” he stated in an online post.

Trump clarified that while vessels from other nations can still traverse the waterway, the U.S. will impose a 20% toll on cargo. According to him, this fee compensates for ensuring “safety and security in this highly volatile region.”

The U.S. has historically opposed fees or tolls on ships passing through the strait.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials maintain that they have control over the Strait of Hormuz.

This development from Trump follows a series of exchanges of fire between the U.S. and Iran over three consecutive weekends, heightening tensions and the possibility of renewed conflict after a fragile ceasefire was established in June.

This story is evolving and will be updated as new information becomes available.
