Musk threatens federal employees still working from home with administrative leave

Elon Musk’s latest move to place government employees on administrative leave if they fail to return to their offices full-time has sparked controversy and confusion within the federal bureaucracy. This escalation comes after President Donald Trump’s executive order last month mandating a return to in-person work and curtailing remote work practices.

In a tweet on Monday, Musk warned that those who continue to ignore President Trump’s executive order will face consequences, including being placed on administrative leave. This decision contradicts the return-to-office plans set by many federal agencies, such as the General Services Administration and National Institutes of Health, which had established deadlines for a phased return to in-person work.

Despite Musk’s directive, legal experts emphasize that only supervisors have the authority to direct employees when to return to the office. However, it remains unclear whether agencies or Musk will attempt to override this rule. If they do, agencies can only issue administrative leave for a maximum of 10 workdays, according to rules outlined by the Office of Personnel Management.

The power struggle between Musk and agency heads was further exacerbated over the weekend when Musk’s team sent an email to employees requesting a list of accomplishments from the previous week. This move created confusion and led to conflicting instructions from various agency heads, with some Trump loyalists advising employees not to respond.

While some Republicans in Congress supported Musk’s initiative, many agencies pushed back against the directive. Despite the backlash, Musk’s influence over the federal government continues to grow, with thousands of government workers facing potential leave or termination.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how agencies will navigate the conflicting directives from Musk and the Trump administration. With Musk’s push for a swift return to in-person work, the federal bureaucracy is facing a period of uncertainty and upheaval. President Trump’s continued support for Musk’s efforts underscores the challenges and complexities surrounding the return-to-office mandate.
