Erin Milez’s paintings capture the chaotic and wild nature of everyday tasks like washing dishes, eating dinner, and caring for young children. Her unique style reflects her experiences of starting a family, showcasing characters and a home that embody the challenges and joys of parenthood.

In Milez’s solo exhibition, “Chimera,” at Monya Rowe Gallery, she delves into the physically and emotionally transformative experience of parenthood. The title of the exhibition references a mythical creature that is part-lion, part-goat, and part-dragon, symbolizing the complex and multifaceted nature of family life. Milez explores the concept of “matrescence,” the transformation of mothers into chimeras, never being singular again, and the struggles and triumphs of balancing family dynamics.

Drawing inspiration from artists like Tetsuya Ishida and WPA-era works, Milez infuses her paintings with a sense of surrealism and everyday reality. Ishida’s depictions of humans merged with machines and banal objects resonate with Milez’s exploration of the everyday juggling act that is parenthood. The physicality and strength depicted in WPA-era murals by artists like Diego Rivera and Stanley Spencer also influence Milez’s work, showcasing the labor and toil involved in daily tasks.

Milez’s paintings reframe mundane scenes into elaborate and chaotic portrayals of family life. From a sink overflowing with objects to a mother squished into a crib trying to help her child sleep, each painting captures the emotional rollercoaster of parenthood. The scenes oscillate between chaos and nurture, reflecting the complicated dynamics between family members and the self.

“Chimera” is a poignant exploration of the challenges and joys of parenthood, depicting the discomforts, uncertainties, and devotion that come with raising a family. Milez’s work is a beautiful and realistic portrayal of the seemingly monstrous aspects of family life, tempered with moments of beauty and reality.
