A tragic incident occurred in the Bronx as a 17-year-old boy was arrested in connection to the murder of 18-year-old Juan J. Pena, who had dreams of joining the Navy. The younger teen faces charges of murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon in relation to the early-morning shooting that took place on Park Avenue near East 176th Street in the Tremont neighborhood.

Despite being charged as an adult, the teen’s case is being handled in the youth part of Bronx Supreme Criminal Court. He was granted supervised release with an electronic monitoring device as the investigation progresses, according to prosecutors. It is believed that there may have been others involved in the fatal shooting, as the NYPD initially released photos of three young men connected to the incident.

The shooting reportedly stemmed from a dispute outside an afterparty, with a black sedan pulling up to the venue and someone inside exchanging words with the victim before opening fire. Juan, a recent graduate of Bronx Leadership Academy High School, had aspirations of joining the Navy. His family described him as a young man full of life and potential, with a bright future ahead of him.

Juan’s mother, Anayeli Pena, expressed her desire for justice for her son, emphasizing that he was not just a victim but a promising young man with a lot to offer. She mourned the loss of her son and called for those responsible to be held accountable for their actions. Juan’s aunt, Shery Olivo, fondly remembered the last time she saw her nephew, just days before his tragic death, when he shared his excitement about pursuing a career in the Navy.

Amidst the grief and shock of losing Juan, his family is determined to seek justice and ensure that his memory lives on. They remember him as a kind-hearted and ambitious individual who had a bright future ahead of him. As they navigate the pain of their loss, they cling to the hope that those responsible for Juan’s untimely death will be brought to justice.
