The city of Portland, Oregon is facing a concerning rise in cases of dysentery, a highly contagious bacterial disease also known as shigellosis. The Multnomah County Health Department has reported an increase in dysentery cases, with symptoms including fever, cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. Health officials warn that the disease spreads easily from person to person through contact with fecal matter from an infected individual.

Two strains of Shigella, the bacteria responsible for dysentery, are circulating in Oregon. While both strains can cause severe diarrhea, the strains in Multnomah County have shown resistance to several antibiotics. The number of dysentery cases has been steadily increasing since 2012, with a significant spike observed between 2023 and 2024. In January 2025 alone, 40 cases were reported, indicating a growing public health concern.

Alarmingly, nearly 60 percent of recent dysentery cases are linked to the city’s homeless population. This correlation highlights the impact of homelessness on public health and underscores the need for comprehensive solutions to address the issue. Despite the availability of data and statistics demonstrating the rise in cases, the situation persists, raising questions about the city’s response to the crisis.

The prevalence of dysentery in Portland serves as a stark reminder of the complex nature of homelessness and its repercussions on society. The lack of adequate sanitation facilities and healthcare access for vulnerable populations exacerbates the spread of diseases like dysentery. It is crucial for policymakers and community leaders to prioritize public health initiatives and address the root causes of homelessness to prevent further outbreaks of preventable diseases.

The current situation in Portland is a sobering reflection of the need for sustained efforts to improve living conditions and access to healthcare for all residents. As the city grapples with the challenges posed by dysentery, it is imperative for stakeholders to work collaboratively towards creating a healthier and more equitable environment for everyone. By addressing the underlying issues contributing to the rise in dysentery cases, Portland can take significant steps towards safeguarding the well-being of its population and promoting a more resilient and inclusive community.
