Spinner Varun Chakravarthy showcased his worth by taking five crucial wickets, leading India to a 44-run triumph over New Zealand in a high-stakes Group A match of the Champions Trophy.

India, opting to bat first, managed to score 249-9, with Matt Henry shining for New Zealand with a five-wicket haul. Despite contributions from Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, and Hardik Pandya, India’s total fell short of expectations.

Chakravarthy’s exceptional performance (5-42) helped India dismiss New Zealand for 205, with Kane Williamson’s impressive 81 not proving to be enough to secure victory.

Having topped Group A, India is set to face Australia in the upcoming semi-final clash in Dubai. On the other hand, New Zealand will battle it out against Group B leaders South Africa in Lahore.

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, praised New Zealand’s performance but emphasized the importance of their own victory. Despite a shaky start, India managed to regroup and deliver a well-rounded performance.

The match saw early setbacks for India, with key players such as Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli falling early to Henry’s bowling. However, partnerships between Iyer, Axar, and Pandya helped stabilize the innings.

In the bowling department, Pandya’s crucial wicket early on set the tone for India. Chakravarthy, making his tournament debut, impressed with his spin bowling, earning him the player-of-the-match accolade.

India’s spin attack proved to be the difference, with Chakravarthy and his colleagues dominating the middle overs and stifling New Zealand’s batting lineup.

New Zealand’s captain, Mitchell Santner, acknowledged India’s control over the game, particularly with their spin options restricting their scoring opportunities.

Overall, India’s well-rounded performance and strategic adjustments proved to be the deciding factor in their victory over New Zealand in this crucial Champions Trophy encounter.
