Study finds solution to a major source of doctor burnout

Doctors are facing increasing levels of burnout and job dissatisfaction due to the overwhelming amount of documentation they are required to complete. A new study by the University of Maryland’s School of Public Health offers a solution that could significantly reduce the time doctors spend writing notes without compromising the quality of care.

The study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, focused on the use of medical scribes and other forms of teamwork for documentation to alleviate the burden on providers. Dr. Nate Apathy, assistant professor of Health Policy and Management, led the research, which involved over 18,000 outpatient doctors across the United States.

The results showed that collaboration on clinical documentation with other team members, such as scribes or other clinicians, can give doctors more time to focus on patient care. Providers who adopted teamwork for note-writing saw an increase in weekly patient visits and a decrease in documentation time. Those whose teams wrote at least 40% of their note content experienced the most significant reduction in time spent on documentation.

On average, visit volume increased by 6% and documentation time decreased by 9.1%. After a 20-week learning period, visit volume increased by 10.8% and documentation time decreased by 16.2%. For high-intensity adopters, weekly documentation time decreased by more than an hour, resulting in substantial time savings for doctors.

The use of medical scribes, whether in-person or virtual, has been shown to be an effective strategy for reducing the administrative burden on doctors. This can lead to increased productivity, more patient visits, and improved job satisfaction. The implementation of virtual scribes, in particular, has become popular among primary care physicians due to their cost-effectiveness and scalability.

In a healthcare system already under significant strain, reducing the administrative workload of doctors through teamwork and collaboration can have a positive impact on both providers and patients. By streamlining the documentation process and allowing doctors to focus on patient care, the quality of healthcare delivery can be improved.

Overall, the study highlights the importance of implementing teamwork and collaborative documentation practices in healthcare settings to address the growing issue of physician burnout. By leveraging the support of medical scribes and other team members, doctors can reduce their administrative burden and focus on what matters most – providing quality care to their patients.
