A tragic incident has shaken the community in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, as a young mother faces charges of child abuse after her 1-year-old child was found dead from severe neglect. Alyssa Wehmeyer, 21, was arrested and charged with abuse or neglect of a child, resulting in death, following the heartbreaking discovery.

Authorities launched an investigation into the toddler’s death on February 28, which raised suspicions due to the circumstances surrounding the child’s passing. It was revealed that Wehmeyer had not fed her child for at least 43 hours before the tragic incident occurred. The neglectful mother claimed to have last fed the child on February 26 around 5 p.m. and then put the child to bed over 24 hours later.

The devastating details of the case paint a picture of extreme neglect, with Wehmeyer allegedly leaving her child unattended in its crib for approximately 19 hours before discovering the baby lifeless and unresponsive with blue lips. Upon further examination, investigators found severe blisters on the victim’s body from a diaper rash, indicating prolonged neglect and lack of proper care.

Wehmeyer attempted to justify her actions by attributing her neglect to a migraine, claiming that she had taken three Excedrin and then took a nap, which prevented her from changing the child’s diaper or seeking medical attention. However, her excuses were not enough to absolve her of the grave consequences of her actions.

The young mother now faces serious charges and is being held at Scott County Jail on a $100,000 bond. The community is left reeling from the tragic loss of the innocent child and grappling with the heartbreaking reality of child abuse and neglect. As the case unfolds, authorities will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the child’s death and seek justice for the victim.
