Help! I Hate My School’s Cringey Valentine Fundraiser

As a middle school teacher, the dread of Valentine’s Day can be all too real. The pressure of dealing with disruptive classroom dynamics caused by school fundraisers can be overwhelming. One teacher, who we’ll call Love Hurts, shared their frustration with a Valentine Gram PTO fundraiser that causes chaos in their classroom every year.

The fundraiser involves students purchasing candygrams ranging from a $2 candy bar to a $20 teddy bear with balloons. Not only do these items cause disruptions in the classroom, but the politics of the system often leave students in tears. Despite years of complaints from teachers, the principal has failed to address the issue with the PTO.

In response to Love Hurts’ dilemma, We Are Teachers offered some advice on how to approach the situation. While it may be too late to make changes for this year’s fundraiser, it’s important to start a conversation about revisiting the fundraiser for the following year. Building stronger connections with the PTO and advocating for teacher input in the planning process is key.

Approaching the conversation with curiosity, empathy, and a willingness to gather feedback through surveys can help in finding a resolution. It’s crucial to remember that both teachers and the PTO have the same goals in mind, despite the challenges faced during fundraisers.

In another scenario, a teacher expressed concerns about handling sensitive topics like immigration raids in the classroom. With students feeling afraid and spreading rumors about deportations, it’s important to seek guidance from the school administration on how to address these issues. Providing reassurance to students about their safety and limiting discussions on uncertain topics can help alleviate anxieties.

Lastly, a teacher shared their experience with a new principal who implemented strict policies in the school. While the changes may feel overwhelming, it’s important to give the new principal some time to adjust. Understanding the reasons behind the changes and maintaining a professional approach can help navigate the transition period.

In conclusion, teachers face various challenges throughout the school year, from managing disruptive fundraisers to addressing sensitive topics in the classroom. Seeking guidance, building relationships with colleagues and administrators, and maintaining a positive attitude can help in overcoming these hurdles and creating a supportive learning environment for students.
