Acrux Wool Systems Revitalizes Christchurch’s Manufacturing Industry with Robotic Knitters

Christchurch-based Acrux Wool Systems is leading the charge in bringing wool garment manufacturing back to the city, thanks to cutting-edge robotic knitting technology. Founded by father and son duo, Don and Tim Symon, along with a group of investors, the company is on a mission to expand its operations at the Phillipstown site.

Currently, Acrux boasts 14 state-of-the-art whole-garment knitting machines, each powered by multiple spools of yarn and programmed to churn out a garment every 50 minutes to 1.5 hours. With a production capacity of 500 to 700 garments per week, the company plans to transition to a 24-hour shift schedule to double output as demand grows.

Specializing in mid-micron workwear such as hoodies, quarter zips, and crewneck styles, Acrux utilizes German-designed technology to produce fine wool knitwear and thermals crafted from merino fibers. Notable clients include fishing giant Sealord, with a recent order of 800 hooded jerseys, as well as partnerships with retailers like Mitre 10 and ITM.

The key to Acrux’s success lies in its robotic manufacturing process, which eliminates the need for manual labor during the main knitting phase. Chief Executive Tim Symon explains that these machines function akin to 3-D printers, significantly reducing labor costs and making local production economically viable.

While the shift towards automation has led to a reduced need for traditional machinists, Acrux has created new opportunities for programmers and technicians with specialized skills to operate and maintain the advanced machinery. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, the company aims to revitalize the local manufacturing sector and drive innovation in garment production.

Looking ahead, Acrux plans to expand its robotic fleet to enhance efficiency and meet growing demand. With a focus on becoming a contract manufacturer for international brands, the company aims to establish a strong presence in Australasia while championing the use of New Zealand wool in sustainable, high-quality garments.

By embracing the latest advancements in knitting robotics and staying true to its commitment to local manufacturing, Acrux Wool Systems is paving the way for a brighter future for the Christchurch textile industry.
