Issa Rae, creator of the hit series “Insecure,” is shedding light on the history of Black television with her upcoming HBO docuseries “Seen & Heard.” During a keynote conversation at SXSW, Rae discussed the inspiration behind the series and the importance of showcasing the untold stories of Black creators in the industry.

The first episode of “Seen & Heard” delves into how studios in the past have exploited Black audiences for their own gain, only to abandon them when it was convenient. Rae explained that while this may sound like a conspiracy theory, the documentary provides concrete evidence of this trend. She emphasized the need to highlight the contributions of Black creators who have often been overlooked in the history of television.

The docuseries features interviews with television icons such as Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Shonda Rhimes, Ava DuVernay, and Norman Lear, offering insights into their careers and personal journeys. Rae expressed her admiration for these trailblazers and the impact they have had on the industry.

Rae also reflected on her own journey in television, revealing that reality TV initially served as a source of frustration and inspiration for her. While Black sitcoms like “Moesha” and “Girlfriends” fueled her passion for storytelling, the lack of representation on television led her to critique the portrayal of Black women in reality shows.

A pivotal moment for Rae came when she witnessed a degrading incident on the dating show “Flavor of Love,” which prompted her to take action and create her own content. This experience motivated her to speak out against the limited and often negative portrayals of Black women on television.

As Rae continues to push boundaries and challenge stereotypes in the industry, “Seen & Heard” stands as a testament to the resilience and creativity of Black creators in television. The docuseries serves as a platform to celebrate their achievements and amplify their voices in a historically exclusionary space.
