MaxHosa: African Luxury Fashion Brand on the Rise

MaxHosa is a study in contrast. Founded as an eco-conscious menswear brand specialized in knitwear, it is now leaning into women’s fashion, which accounts for 60% of its business. The brand’s original intent was to shift African fashion away from “special occasion” wear by designing contemporary luxury for everyday use. However, it has found a strong presence in the wedding and ceremonial circuit, where it is highly favored by a culture-savvy generation looking to honor their heritage in a modern way.

Despite current challenges in the luxury market due to geopolitical factors, founder and creative director Laduma Ngxokolo sees the silver lining. “We are currently on the brink of unlocking a great opportunity in the fashion world as it embraces new faces,” Ngxokolo mentioned during a recent interview. The brand is making waves in major South African cities, with only 2% of their goals achieved so far.

Ngxokolo’s expertise lies in reshaping how African fashion is perceived globally. For the fall collection showcased in Paris, he presented 31 looks set to a soundtrack by hip-hop artist Maglera Doe Boy. The collection featured MaxHosa’s signature vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and embellishments.

Key pieces included a tiered shift dress with a mix of diamonds and zigzag motifs in warm sunset tones, accented with white faux fur. A black halter dress with colorful squiggles and blue fringe added a modern touch to traditional designs. The designer also reimagined an iconic jacket with a Jo’burg twist. Teardrop cutouts over the ribcage in some outfits added a hint of sensuality, challenging stereotypes about African-inspired clothing.

This Paris showcase is just a preview of what’s to come for MaxHosa. The brand plans to host a larger fashion show in South Africa, featuring three times the number of looks. With eight owned stores, two factories, and 300 employees, MaxHosa is making a significant impact in the fashion industry. Keep an eye out for their upcoming showcase in New York during Fashion Month, as this indie brand continues to make waves.
