Senate Democrats seem to have finally tuned into the public sentiment.
In an unusual display of restraint, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer remained largely silent while his party wrestled with the implications of a Continuing Resolution (CR) passed by House Republicans that many deemed inadequate.
However, Schumer eventually offered his thoughts late Wednesday, announcing a strategy that involved a filibuster against the contentious bill.
On the Senate floor, Schumer proclaimed:
Funding the government ought to be a collaborative effort.
However, Republicans have chosen a partisan route, crafting their Continuing Resolution without soliciting input from Congressional Democrats.
As a result, Republicans lack the necessary votes in the Senate to invoke cloture on the House’s CR.
Our caucus is united behind a clean CR that maintains government operations until April 11th, allowing Congress time to negotiate bipartisan legislation that is viable. We should put that to a vote.
I encourage our Republican colleagues to join us in order to avert a shutdown by Friday.
