The principal of a Christchurch school is seeking to terminate its contract with the Compass Group due to ongoing issues and subpar service. Leaders at Haeata Community Campus in Wainoni have expressed frustration with the Ka Ora, Ka Ako Healthy Schools Lunch programme and are considering delivering lunches independently with approval from Associate Education Minister David Seymour.

Despite the school’s intentions, Seymour has rejected the idea, emphasizing the importance of honoring the existing contract for timely and improved meal deliveries.

The lunch programme has faced criticism nationwide for meal quality and service, with recent developments including the transfer of lunch operations from Libelle Group to Compass Group NZ after the former went into liquidation.

Dr. Peggy Burrows, principal of Haeata Community Campus, described the programme’s performance during the first term as disruptive and inadequate. Issues such as frozen meals, excessively hot deliveries, and repetitive menu options have raised concerns among staff and students.

While acknowledging the programme’s value, Burrows highlighted the need for better execution to meet the students’ nutritional requirements. Despite the school’s initial attempt to take over lunch provision, the Ministry of Education rejected the proposal in favor of the Compass contract.

In response to the school’s dissatisfaction, Seymour stated that exemptions from the programme would not be granted, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving meal delivery and addressing concerns raised by participating schools.

While facing criticism, Seymour defended the programme’s progress and encouraged a positive outlook on addressing challenges. He cited instances where schools reconsidered withdrawing from the programme due to overwhelming support from parents and students who valued the lunch service.

Overall, the debate surrounding the school lunch programme reflects differing perspectives on its implementation and effectiveness, highlighting the ongoing efforts to enhance the quality and delivery of meals to students across New Zealand.
