Douglas County Renames Road in Honor of Kendrick Castillo
Douglas County officials have made the decision to rename a Highlands Ranch roadway to honor Kendrick Castillo, the brave STEM School student who lost his life in 2019 while trying to stop a school shooting.
The Board of Douglas County Commissioners recently approved the renaming of Lucent Boulevard, a stretch of road that runs from County Line Road to South Broadway, to Kendrick Castillo Way.
Located just a mile west of the school where the tragic incident occurred, Kendrick Castillo, 18, courageously confronted one of the armed students who entered his classroom on May 7, 2019.
While Kendrick tragically lost his life, his classmates and friends Brendan Bialy and Josh Jones also took heroic actions to stop the gunman. Jones was injured in the incident, while Bialy escaped unharmed.
John Castillo, Kendrick’s father, expressed his gratitude during a public hearing, stating that the family is deeply honored by the decision to rename the road that he drives on daily in memory of his son.
In 2020, Colorado lawmakers passed a bill to rename a section of C-470 from University Boulevard to Santa Fe Drive as the Kendrick Castillo Memorial Highway.
