German artist neck, also known as Oliver, has been capturing the beauty and uniqueness of common audiotape designs since 1989. His project, tapedeck, is a comprehensive archive aiming to document the vast array of cassettes produced during the latter part of the 20th century.

The cassette tape, introduced in 1963, initially faced tough competition from reel-to-reel and 8-track technologies. However, its portability and suitability for recorded music eventually propelled it to the top of the market. By the 1970s, the sound quality of cassette tapes had significantly improved, making them a favorite among consumers. Throughout the 1980s, cassettes continued to dominate the music scene until CDs took over in the 1990s.

Beyond their use for music, cassette tapes played a significant role in social change. Their small size, durability, and ability to copy recordings made them essential tools for sharing music and cultural influences. For example, underground punk and rock tapes were instrumental in communicating Western culture to young generations behind the Iron Curtain in Europe.

Tapedeck celebrates the cultural legacy and aesthetic appeal of cassette tapes by offering a searchable visual database of nearly one thousand examples. Users can explore the collection by playing time, color, material, and brand, highlighting the unique graphic design elements of tapes from the 1970s to the 1980s. The platform serves as a microcosm of graphic design trends from that era.

Visit the tapedeck website to browse through hundreds of cassette tape designs and even contribute by submitting pictures of tapes not yet included in the archive. The project aims to preserve the visual history of cassette tapes and their impact on popular culture.
