Police authorities have officially identified the individual who tragically lost his life in a train-related incident in Invercargill last week.

The deceased has been named as Geoffrey Francis McIver, a 54-year-old resident of Invercargill.

The case has been handed over to the coroner for further investigation.

Reports indicate that emergency services responded to the scene on Elles Rd, near Turnbull Thomson Park, around 5.20pm on Monday, where Mr. McIver was discovered deceased after the incident.

KiwiRail’s executive general manager of operations, Paul Ashton, confirmed that a north-bound freight train was involved in a collision with a pedestrian at the Ness St pedestrian crossing, equipped with warning signs and a pedestrian maze.

The freight train was en route from Invercargill to Dunedin, transporting coal at the time of the incident.
