A curious notion seems to have taken hold among many Republicans: the belief that Donald Trump’s return to the Oval Office would result in a silencing of strong, diverse voices—particularly those of women, people of color, and individuals with disabilities.

However, the reality has proven quite the opposite. As Trump dons his figurative white hood under the pretense of opposing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), many of these marginalized voices are only growing louder.

One prominent example is Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), who has faced backlash from Republicans for referring to Texas Governor Greg Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels.”

While the GOP accused Crockett of “mocking a disabled person,” the Congresswoman stood her ground. As someone with a physical disability myself, I found no offense in her comment. It is somewhat amusing, however, to witness the Republican Party suddenly championing the rights of those with disabilities, while simultaneously advocating for policies that threaten their jobs, healthcare, education, and Social Security.

In response to the Republican uproar, Rep. Crockett stated in an interview with Semafor:

“The criticism I’m receiving comes from Republicans who are ‘nervous about me’ and ‘afraid that people listen to me.’ The very Republicans now claiming I’ve insulted disabled individuals are merely trying to distract from their agenda to dismantle the Education Department, which provides essential resources for our community.”

“They’ve accused me of getting rich off of some nefarious dealings in Congress. Then they pivoted to insinuating I have a husband involved in something shady. Now they’re upset that I’ve benefited from a private education, and are even angry about my long-standing support for peaceful protests.”

Crockett’s observations hold weight. The fear Republicans have of her is palpable, and given Trump’s dwindling approval ratings, it’s clear that more people are beginning to listen.

Trump and the Republican Party are experiencing a decline in popularity, and their attempts to silence voices like Jasmine Crockett cannot obscure the reality that both he and his party are facing significant rejection from a majority of Americans.
