RiverRock: A Modern Tribute to Frank Lloyd Wright

In 1952, an Ohio art teacher and his wife, Louis and Pauline Penfield, visited Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin studio in Wisconsin. During their tour, Louis challenged Wright to design a house for someone as tall as him. Wright, known for his quick wit, responded by saying Louis was a “weed” at 6-foot-8, but he would take on the challenge. Six months later, the Penfields received a design for the Louis Penfield House, a unique Usonian home tailored to fit Louis’ height.

After completing their first home, the Penfields faced the threat of eminent domain due to the construction of Interstate 90. They reached out to Wright for a second design, and although he was 91 at the time, he promised to deliver. Unfortunately, Wright passed away before completing the design, but a plan labeled Project 5909 was discovered posthumously.

Decades later, in 2025, Project 5909 finally came to life with the completion of RiverRock, a stunning 2,000-square-foot home nestled in the woods of Willoughby Hills, Ohio. Designed with tall glass windows, heated floors, a wood-burning fireplace, and panoramic views, RiverRock pays homage to Wright’s vision while offering a modern retreat for guests to rent.

Sarah Dykstra, the current owner of RiverRock, along with her mother Deborah Dykstra, meticulously brought Wright’s design to fruition, staying true to his original intentions. The house incorporates local stone from the Chagrin River, blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings.

While some debate whether a posthumously constructed house truly belongs in Wright’s portfolio, the Dykstras and the Penfield family see RiverRock as a tribute to Wright’s Usonian spirit. Paul Penfield, the son of Louis and Pauline, expressed his family’s appreciation for the project, noting how much they and Wright would have cherished the finished product.

As RiverRock opens its doors to overnight guests, it invites visitors to experience Wright’s vision firsthand. By preserving and honoring his legacy, projects like RiverRock ensure that the iconic architect’s influence continues to inspire future generations. Whether or not it aligns perfectly with Wright’s original plans, RiverRock stands as a testament to his enduring impact on American art and architecture.
