The latest episode of “Saturday Night Live” kicked off with a hilarious take on the Department of Defense group text scandal, featuring host Mikey Madison. Madison, known for her recent Oscar-winning performance in “Anora,” played a teenage girl gossiping with her friends (played by Ego Nwodim and Sarah Sherman) in a group chat that was unexpectedly infiltrated by U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, portrayed by Andrew Dismukes.

In the skit, Hegseth casually dropped sensitive information about a Yemen raid, sparking chaos in the group chat. The White House came under scrutiny after it was revealed that high-ranking officials, including Hegseth and JD Vance, had unknowingly added The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, to a confidential Signal group discussing military plans.

As the chat continued, Hegseth made inappropriate comments about Israel and the troops, while Vice President Bowen Yang joined in with his own cryptic remarks. The comedic timing was on point as Madison’s character abruptly ended the conversation when a car horn signaled her ride to the movies with Matt.

A playful jab at former congressman Gaetz added to the humor, with Madison revealing that she was indeed meeting up with him. Secretary of State Marco Rubio (played by Marcello Hernandez) made a cameo, pretending to prank the girls before requesting their personal information for deportation purposes.

Madison’s hosting debut on “Saturday Night Live” was a standout moment, as she showcased her comedic chops in the cold open, a rare opportunity for a first-time host. The skit expertly blended satire with current events, delivering laughs while addressing serious issues in a lighthearted manner.
