Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been actively involved in the revocation of visas for individuals who are deemed to be counter to the United States’ foreign policy or engaged in criminal activities. Since taking office in late January, Mr. Rubio estimated that he has signed over 300 letters to force the expulsion of students, visitors, and others from the country.

During a press conference aboard an Air Force jet, Mr. Rubio stated that he personally reviews each case before signing off on visa revocations. He emphasized that individuals charged with crimes while in the United States should automatically lose their visas, and even permanent residents are not exempt as he has also initiated the process of stripping individuals of their green cards.

Mr. Rubio’s stringent approach extends to students and recent graduates who he believes oppose American foreign policy. He cited a case where he revoked the visa of a Tufts University doctoral student from Turkey who had expressed support for Palestinian rights and divestment from Israel. The student was subsequently apprehended by federal agents outside her home in Massachusetts.

Furthermore, Mr. Rubio has also taken action against pro-Palestinian activists at Columbia University, leading to the removal of permanent residency status for two students. One of the students, Mahmoud Khalil, was detained in Louisiana while his wife, a U.S. citizen, was eight months pregnant. Legal challenges have been filed against Mr. Rubio, including lawsuits from affected individuals.

Critics have raised concerns about the resemblance of Mr. Rubio’s actions to those of authoritarian regimes that suppress free speech and assembly. Despite this, Mr. Rubio has defended his decisions, stating that individuals causing disruption and instability should not be welcomed into the country.

When questioned about the rights of other countries to deport foreign students involved in protests, Mr. Rubio emphasized that every country has the authority to deny visas to individuals based on their own criteria. This stance has sparked debates about the balance between national security interests and the protection of civil liberties.

In conclusion, Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s approach to visa revocations and deportation reflects a strong stance on national security and foreign policy alignment. While his actions have faced criticism, Mr. Rubio remains steadfast in his efforts to ensure that individuals who pose a threat to the country’s interests are removed from the United States.
