Following their return to Earth after an unexpected nine-month stay in space, astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams shared their thoughts in their first interview. They expressed that they are not interested in assigning blame, do not consider their mission a failure, and would be willing to go back to space if given the chance.

Williams acknowledged the challenges of space flight, especially in light of Boeing’s Starliner malfunction that prevented their safe return from the International Space Station. She emphasized the teamwork involved in assessing risks and operating brand-new systems.

Wilmore pushed back on the notion that they were “stranded,” stating that they were not left or forgotten. He also recognized shared responsibility for the mission’s outcome, including his role as the mission commander.

The astronauts remained positive about their time in space, with Wilmore viewing time away from family as part of the job. Williams noted the challenges faced by their families during their absence.

When asked about their willingness to return to space, both astronauts expressed interest in another mission, prioritizing those who have not yet experienced space travel.
