In a political landscape where many Democratic voters are feeling abandoned, Senator Cory Booker has stepped up, ready to commandeer the Senate floor for as long as it takes to amplify the voices of those adversely affected by the current administration’s policies.

Watch Booker Live:

During his opening remarks, Booker stated:

I rise tonight with the intention of disrupting the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able.

I rise tonight because our nation is in crisis:

Fundamental commitments are being violated;

Americans from all walks of life are shouldering unnecessary hardships;

Our institutions are facing reckless and unconstitutional assaults that threaten to dismantle them.

In just 71 days, the President has inflicted a series of damaging blows to our safety, financial security, democratic foundations, and any semblance of decency.

These are not normal times in our nation.

And they should not be treated as such in the United States Senate.

The dangers facing the American people and our democracy are significant and immediate, demanding concerted action from all of us.

Future generations will look back at this moment and ask a singular question: where were you?

When our country was in turmoil and the American populace sought our assistance—did we respond?

When the 73 million seniors reliant on Social Security found themselves abandoned, did we raise our voices?

When grocery prices soared and the stock market tanked, leaving everyday Americans in distress, while the President waged a trade war against our allies, dismissed regulators, dismantled consumer protection agencies, promoted his own meme currency, and starred in a car commercial for the wealthiest individual in the country, did we speak out?

Video of Booker discussing cuts to Medicaid:

When the President attempted to strip healthcare from individuals with disabilities to finance tax breaks for the billionaires surrounding him at his inauguration and during cabinet meetings;

When he decimated public education, slashed funding for pediatric cancer research, and dismissed thousands of veterans who served this country;

When he abandoned our allies and international obligations as floods, fires, hurricanes, and droughts wreaked havoc on communities, while dangerous infectious diseases continued to pose a global threat.

When the American press faced censorship;

when international students disappeared from our communities;

when our universities faced silencing;

when American law firms were targeted;

when those who attacked police officers defending our democracy on January 6th were not only pardoned but celebrated by the highest office in the land;

When citizens across the nation were shouting:

this is not right;

this is un-American;

this is not who we are.

Did we respond?

I rise tonight because silence in this moment of national crisis would be a betrayal, and at stake is nothing less than the very essence of our identity.

This is not a filibuster.

Booker’s action is not to obstruct the Senate’s business; rather, it is a prolonged floor speech aimed at raising awareness about pressing issues. Unlike a filibuster, which aims to block legislation, Booker’s approach invites engagement without requiring his colleagues to respond.

In contrast to recent all-nighter sessions where groups of senators have collaborated to spotlight specific issues, Booker’s efforts exemplify what true leadership should resemble.

Democrats must adopt a more disruptive strategy and refuse to accept the Trump presidency as the new normal.

Cory Booker is illuminating the path forward.
