Crime rates in New York City saw a significant decrease in the early months of 2025, thanks to the proactive leadership of NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Since taking the helm at the end of last year, Tisch wasted no time in implementing new policies and weeding out corrupt officials to improve public safety and reduce repeat offenses.

According to exclusive crime statistics obtained by The Post, violent crime in NYC has seen a remarkable decline under Tisch’s leadership. The number of murders dropped to 63 in the first quarter of the year, a 35% decrease from the same period last year when there were 96 reported murders.

Shootings also saw a substantial decrease, with 140 incidents and 164 victims recorded so far in 2025, representing a 23% drop from the 182 shootings and 214 victims reported in the first quarter of 2024. If this trend continues, New York City could see the lowest number of murders and shootings in nearly a decade, dating back to 2017 and 2018.

Tisch’s no-nonsense approach to law enforcement has been praised by many within the NYPD. One Manhattan detective remarked, “Tisch is running this like a business, and the bottom line is crime reduction.”

Under Tisch’s leadership, the NYPD has intensified its focus on quality of life issues by launching a dedicated “Quality of Life” division. This initiative targets problems such as aggressive panhandling, open-air drug use, and homelessness. Specialized teams have been deployed to address these issues with a centralized leadership approach, streamlining operations for greater efficiency.

In addition to addressing immediate concerns, Tisch has also made strategic changes to the police academy requirements to bolster the force. By reinstating the timed 1.5-mile run and reducing the minimum college credits required from 60 to 24, Tisch aims to attract a diverse pool of candidates to join the NYPD.

In a January op-ed for The Post, Tisch emphasized the importance of tackling recidivism rates to ensure lasting improvements in public safety. She highlighted the significance of prioritizing the rights and needs of victims over the revolving door of the criminal justice system.

As crime rates continue to decline in NYC, Commissioner Tisch’s proactive approach is making a tangible impact on the city’s safety and security. The Post reached out to Commissioner Tisch for comment on the first-quarter crime statistics, further underscoring the ongoing efforts to combat crime and improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers.
