Gun violence continues to plague the streets of the Bronx, with two innocent passersby becoming the latest victims of senseless shootings. The incident occurred just blocks away from where a teenage girl lost her life after riding her scooter into the crossfire of rival teen gangs.

According to police reports, the two gunmen targeted a group of males at the corner of East 163rd Street and Washington Avenue in Melrose, opening fire around 4:45 p.m. However, their bullets struck two individuals in a passing car, including an 11-year-old boy. The boy suffered minor injuries from shattered glass, while the 20-year-old male driver was shot in the left shoulder. The driver was transported to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition, while the boy received treatment for his injuries.

The suspects fled the scene on Citi Bikes, leaving behind two vehicles riddled with bullets. One car had a bullet hole the size of a golf ball through the rear window, while another had its rear window nearly blown out. Despite the chaos, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

This shooting comes on the heels of another tragic incident where 16-year-old Evette Jeffrey was shot and killed while riding her scooter in the Morrisania schoolyard. The fatal shooting, which police believe to be gang-related, involved a 14-year-old boy who has since been arrested. Authorities are still searching for a 12-year-old accomplice who allegedly provided the weapon used in the crime.

The Bronx has seen a surge in gun violence in recent months, with innocent bystanders falling victim to stray bullets. In late April, two individuals were fatally shot in separate incidents just days apart. The community mourned the loss of Excenia Mette, a beloved bodega owner, and Daoud Marji, a young plumber’s apprentice, both caught in the crossfire of escalating violence.

As authorities work to address the root causes of gang-related violence in the Bronx, residents are left grappling with the devastating impact of these senseless acts. The community mourns the loss of innocent lives and hopes for a future where gun violence is no longer a daily threat on the streets of their neighborhoods.
