Following his extradition to India, Tahawwur Rana, a key figure in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, was handed over by US Marshals to Indian authorities. The US Justice Department released photos of Rana in a prison uniform, escorted by US Marshals, as he was transferred to representatives of the Ministry of External Affairs on April 9.
Between November 26 and 29, 2008, gunmen affiliated with the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) carried out coordinated attacks in Mumbai.

Rana is accused of facilitating the attacks by aiding David Coleman Headley in obtaining fraudulent documents to travel to India. Headley, trained by LeT in Pakistan, conducted surveillance and provided information to LeT operatives.

Following his conviction in the US for supporting LeT, Rana faced extradition to India, which was delayed due to health concerns. Despite his medical conditions, Rana was handed over to Indian authorities on April 9 and placed in NIA custody.
