Small businesses across the United States are feeling the pressure of President Trump’s increased tariffs, as highlighted in a recent open letter penned by 38 female consumer product founders. The letter, spearheaded by Allison Luvera of Juliet Wine, sheds light on the challenges faced by small businesses due to the escalating tariff rates imposed by the current administration.

While President Trump recently announced a 90-day tariff pause for some countries, setting the rate at 10%, China saw its tariffs raised to a staggering 145%, including the previous 20% levy. This drastic increase has put small businesses in a precarious position, with many struggling to find affordable supply chain alternatives in the face of mounting costs.

The letter appeals to President Trump and Congress to reconsider the tariff increases, particularly for small businesses that lack the resources to absorb such steep costs. Small business owners like Luvera are facing unexpected financial burdens, with annual bills amounting to $200,000 due to overseas sourcing of key components that have no U.S. alternatives.

The group of female founders emphasizes the disproportionate impact of tariffs on small businesses, citing examples of brands that rely on overseas suppliers for essential materials. These businesses, collectively generating $800 million annually and employing thousands, stress the urgent need for exemptions or financial assistance to navigate the challenges posed by the current trade policies.

In an effort to amplify their voices and garner support, the founders are calling on fellow small business owners and concerned individuals to join them in lobbying Congress. They are advocating for a comprehensive small business assessment to quantify the impact of tariffs and pushing for measures such as grants, tax incentives, or technical assistance to help small businesses adapt to the changing trade landscape.

Notable signatories of the letter include designer Rebecca Minkoff, Alison Wyatt of the Female Founder Collective, Emily Doyle and Mei Kwok of Dune Suncare, and Yanghee Paik of Rael. Their collective plea highlights the urgent need for support and relief for small businesses grappling with the repercussions of escalating tariffs under the current administration’s trade policies.
