While Senate Democrats currently find themselves in the minority, they wield more influence than their counterparts in the House, where the majority party reigns supreme. One effective strategy for the Senate Democrats to counter the Trump administration is through procedural maneuvers that can significantly slow down legislative progress. This creates a scenario where Senate Republicans must laboriously navigate every achievement they hope to secure.

Axios reported that Senate Republicans are feeling overwhelmed by the pace of the Democratic strategy to turn the Senate into a drawn-out affair:

After thirteen weeks in session, with 213 votes and 55 confirmations, the fatigue is palpable: two vote-a-ramas and a final vote at 2 a.m. have Senate Republicans eagerly anticipating a two-week recess.

Why this matters: Republicans have urged their new leader to reinvigorate Senate productivity. Majority Leader John Thune has risen to the occasion, yet the persistent Democratic opposition has taken its toll.

  • Thune has been engaged in constant negotiations with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer regarding vote scheduling, and the delays instigated by Democrats have been particularly taxing, as reported by several Republican senators.

  • Senate staffers have had to exhibit considerable adaptability, frequently rescheduling meetings or media engagements over recent weeks.

  • Tomorrow marks the 100th day of the 119th Congress, but hopes for a Thursday afternoon departure were dashed by Democratic holds on President Trump’s nominee for chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

When observers remark about Senate Democrats not taking more initiative, or when they celebrate the Democrats finally acting, it often stems from a lack of understanding about the ongoing activities of Senate Democrats.

Senate Democrats make a concerted effort to communicate their actions to the public almost daily; unfortunately, mainstream media often overlooks these efforts, ensconced instead in a Trump-centric narrative.

Despite holding multiple press conferences each week, it seems that the visibility of these events on cable news is nearly non-existent. Even networks like MSNBC, which are perceived as left-leaning, devote over 90% of their airtime to Trump-related coverage.

As it stands, Senate Democrats are effectively stalling Senate proceedings, and this strategy is yielding results. Nearly 100 days into Republican congressional control, the Trump agenda remains largely untouched, gathering metaphorical dust.

The current objective for Senate Democrats is to ensure that the path forward is anything but straightforward for Trump and his party.

Based on the grumblings from Republican senators, it appears that the Democrats’ efforts are hitting their mark.

What are your thoughts on the Senate Democrats’ tactics of obstruction and delay? We invite you to share your opinions in the comments below.
