The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) in Ohio is seeing a major shift as staff members have voted to unionize, with 86% of workers in favor of the decision. This move comes at a crucial time for the museum, as it undergoes a significant collection reinstallation effort and faces challenges in the current political climate that impact the arts and culture sector.

Under the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), around 100 workers from various departments such as visitor services, glass studio, research, education, curatorial, and library will form the new union. The decision to unionize was driven by concerns about job security, benefits, and wages, particularly in light of the ongoing reinstallation project that is set to transform the museum.

Skye Sloane, a team leader for visitor services, and Chuchen Song, a specialist at the museum’s glass studio, spearheaded the organizing efforts. Sloane emphasized the importance of securing benefits through a union contract to ensure long-term stability, especially as the museum undergoes significant changes. He also highlighted the need for fair wages, particularly for part-time employees who currently lack health insurance.

Song, who has been with the museum since 2021, expressed the importance of unity among coworkers during challenging times. The decision to unionize reflects a collective effort to support each other and address shared concerns within the museum community.

In response to the unionization efforts, Jennifer McCary, the museum’s chief culture and brand experience officer, stated that TMA is committed to fostering a supportive and collaborative work environment for all employees. This move towards unionization comes as arts organizations across the country face funding challenges due to changes in federal grant programs under the Trump administration.

Despite potential funding impacts, the unionization of TMA staff signals a commitment to solidarity and mutual support in navigating uncertain times. As Namita Waghray, spokesperson for AFSCME Ohio Council 8, noted, coming together as a union allows employees to have a collective voice and advocate for their rights and interests.

Overall, the decision to unionize at TMA reflects a proactive approach to addressing the evolving needs and challenges facing the museum and its staff. By banding together, employees are working towards creating a more secure and equitable work environment for all members of the museum community.
